We begin by understanding the unique features of each property, incorporating the client’s vision, and honoring the natural terrain. Our comprehensive, step-by-step approach ensures a seamless journey from concept to completion, delivering courses that are not only beautiful but sustainable, playable, and unforgettable. With a focus on precision, creativity, and long-term partnerships, we bring each client’s vision to life while preserving the authenticity of the land.

Aesthetic Elegance Meets Sustainability

Our golf course landscaping design philosophy includes sustainable practices.

Our Golf Course Design Services
  • 1 Initial Site Visit & Client Introduction
Walk the property, meet with the client, and survey the site to understand its natural features, constraints, and opportunities.
  • 2 Site Inventory & Rough Layout
Collect detailed data (e.g., topography, vegetation, water features) and outline a rough course layout to guide further planning.
  • 3 Preliminary Review & Key Element Discussion
Hold an informal meeting with the client to share findings, identify priorities (trees, ponds, walking paths), and clarify any new requirements.
  • 4 Master Planning & Design Development
Draft the full course layout on paper, detailing tee boxes, bunkers, fairways, and greens. Incorporate budget considerations at this stage.
  • 5 Plan Proposal & Budget Presentation
Present the plan to the client, architects, and relevant officials. Secure feedback and refine construction costs in preparation for approvals.
  • 6 Permitting & Approvals
Obtain necessary permissions from city councils, land development boards, or coastal commissions to proceed with construction.
  • 7 Pre-Construction Coordination
Conduct a final walkthrough, finalizing the construction plan and selecting contractors. Confirm the scope of work and timeline with all stakeholders.
  • 8 Construction Phase
Execute the approved plan, focusing on quality, safety, and adherence to the design vision.
  • 9 Grow-In Period
Ensure the newly installed drainage and irrigation systems are functioning properly while turf and plants establish themselves.
  • 10 Ongoing Architect Review
Schedule follow-up visits at 1, 6, and 12 months to confirm that the course is developing as intended and address any needed adjustments.

“At Matthew Scott Golf Design, our philosophy is one of respect, creativity, and collaboration with the natural world. We’re dedicated to creating courses that aren’t just technically sound, but that invite players to experience golf as it was meant to be played—against the backdrop of nature’s own design.”
